 Information about the Specialty

Respiratory Medicine dual accredits with IM stage 2.

This programme aims to provide a very high quality of Thoracic Respiratory Medicine training. Trainees will be appointed to the rotation, not to specific hospitals. The first post is as described in the advert, thereafter posting will be arranged by the TPD taking into account firstly the training requirements of all the trainees, then specific individual requirements and finally personal preferences. However, wherever possible trainees will only be asked to make one major move within the rotation. Trainees will usually spend 12-18 months in one of the teaching hospitals towards the end of their training. A period of OOPE for research or sub-specialty training is encouraged. ICU and thoracic surgery experience are both available in several centres.

Description of the Training Rotation

This training programme covers the whole of Health Education South West and rotations are mixed between Severn and Peninsula offering a unique and broad spectrum of training opportunities in the North and South of the programme.

The training programme director allocates placements and rotations based on training requirements but acknowledges the size of the region and programme and allocates trainees accordingly. Your rotation will not be dictated by the NTN number issued.

The hospitals on the training rotation are Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (Barnstaple), Musgrove Park Hospital ( Taunton ), Royal Devon & Exeter ( Exeter ), Torbay hospital (Torquay), Derriford Hospital ( Plymouth ), Royal Cornwall Hospital ( Truro ), Yeovil, Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Southmead, Royal United Hospitals Bath, Cheltenham, Gloucester and Swindon. There is no fixed day for rotation although most rotate on the first Wednesday in August.
