Information about the Specialty

The hospitals included on the training rotation in Devon and Cornwall are Derriford Hospital(Plymouth), Royal Devon and Exeter (Exeter), Taunton and Somerset Hospital (Taunton) and United Bristol Hospital Trust.
Higher Specialist Training (HST) as a Specialist Registrar is conducted in Faculty approved training posts supervised by consultant Occupational Physicians; it follows an agreed training programme and takes a minimum of 4 years. SpRs keep a personal Training Record and are subject to annual assessments by the RGPD - which must be satisfactory. Flexible training may be available by arrangement with the Regional Post-Graduate Dean.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements of the training programme, SpRs must take the examination for Associateship of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (AFOM), normally at about the mid point of HST. An additional mandatory requirement for SpRs is the submission of a dissertation.

This takes the form of a research project and is conducted in the latter part of HST. Membership of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (MFOM) can only be awarded once Higher Specialist Training is complete and the dissertation has been accepted. Assuming that training has been conducted satisfactorily the Faculty will recommend to the STA that a certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) be awarded. On receipt of this the Doctor may apply to the General Medical Council for inclusion on its Specialist Register.
